Bankers and Taxi Apps

It appears that there are a couple of bankers lately who are leaving or looking to leave their current jobs and have started to make and launch their own taxi-sharing apps.

This is interesting because these entrepreneurs (and major kudos to them!) are coming out with their own resources to bootstrap, packing exposure/experience in business models/technology and what I must imagine are pretty intersting industry networks.

But have chosen to plough these into what appears to be a hyper localized application with little market size in Singapore. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, especially with the challenges of industry fragmentation affecting their individual network growths, and how the revenue model is going to develop... =)

Back from Hiatus

Seems like it's been years (and actually is) since my last post - but well, I'm back! Will probably post more very shortly! =)

Random Thought

Look up for temporary aspirational motivation but look down for long lasting inspirational drive.

Handicapped Toilet? Right this Way ....

Probably a result of planning by committe. Won't be surprised if this happens in Singapore also.

Quote of the Day

"The history of the failure of war can almost be summed up in two words: too late"

Thought of the Day

Just discovered how horrendously my vocabulary has regressed to. Perhaps its attributable to the previous 4 years of intellectual atrophy and ennui. Heh. :P

Well, time to sharpen the scalpel of communication before it dulls into becoming a nothing more than a bludgeoning tool.

Video - How to Make Good Decisions

Take 48 mins off your day to watch this.

Actually, its so good that you should just bump 48 mins off something less important to watch it:

We are bad at making decisions. According to science, our decisions are based on oversimplification, laziness and prejudice. And that's assuming that we haven't already been hijacked by our surroundings or led astray by our subconscious!

Featuring exclusive footage of experiments that show how our choices can be confounded by temperature, warped by post-rationalisation and even manipulated by the future, Horizon presents a guide to better decision making, and introduces you to Mathematician Garth Sundem, who is convinced that conclusions can best be reached using simple maths and a pencil!

Thought of the Day

Global productivity would probably increase if Microsoft Excel didn't open with the default 3 spreadsheets. Think of all that man-hours saved if people didn't have to click to Sheet2 and Sheet3 just to check that there's nothing there....

Eldery Airbags

What an interesting and useful idea ... Wonder if it will come to Singapore where we keep harping about our aging population ...

Sir Ken Robinson Interviewed by Riz Khan

Much like the TED Video, a delightfully refreshing insight into the modern education system. Take 20 minutes off for this one.

Google Talk - No Time to Think

Vannevar Bush's 1945 article, "As We May Think," has been much celebrated as a central inspiration for the development of hypertext and the World Wide Web. Less attention, however, has been paid to Bush's motivation for imagining a new generation of information technologies; it was his hope that more powerful tools, by automating the routine aspects of information processing, would leave researchers and other professionals more time for creative thought. But now, more than sixty years later, it seems clear that the opposite has happened, that the use of the new technologies has contributed to an accelerated mode of working and living that leaves us less to think, not more. In this talk I will explore how this state of affairs has come about and what we can do about it.

Thought of the Day

I think unconventional failures provide more opportunities in the future than ordinary success.
